Engineers Week 2022: Meet Doug Berschauer, PE

Share

Since 1951, Engineers Week has inspired the next generation of STEM leaders by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. Parametrix has a vested interest in ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce.

This week, the engineers of Parametrix share what inspires them, what they enjoy about engineering, favorite projects, advice, and how they are “reimagining the possible”.

Doug is a Senior Consultant with Parametrix’s Puget Sound Water team. He has been with Parametrix for over 20 years and has nearly 40 years of industry experience.

What inspired you to become an engineer?

My father, he was a civil engineer and a successful consultant.

What do you enjoy most about being an engineer?

Helping clients and other employee-owners. In particular, helping smaller clients solve their biggest problems. Mentoring up and coming leaders.

Tell us about a project you have worked on and how it inspired you.

I spent 12 years working with the City of Orting. It was not just a job or a client, they became family. I consider Orting my second hometown. Many of my smaller clients were fun, and a joy to work with, regardless of the project. I spent many days working in both Barrow and Kodiak, Alaska. Fascinating places, wonderful people.

This year’s theme is “Reimagining the Possible.” How are you reimagining the possible in your career?

At this point in my career it is important to coach and mentor the next generation of Parametrix employee-owners. I am excited to be able to have two public speaking classes which falls in line with my advice below. I have taught public speaking since 1995 starting at Parametrix, then “another firm”, and now it is starting again this month back at Parametrix.

What advice do you have for the next generation of engineers?

Does not matter how smart you are, if you are not able to effectively communicate your ideas and solutions, your success will fall short.

Anything else you would like to add?

Believe in yourself, it does matter. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes: “Change your thoughts and you will change your world” – Norman Vincent Peale
