Bremerton, WA – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) recently awarded Parametrix the State Route 3 (SR 3) Freight Corridor New Alignment Design contract. The contract includes an update to the traffic model and ultimately, the project will include design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction of a bypass around Belfair.

As a vital transportation link for communities on the Kitsap Peninsula and in Mason County, the SR 3 corridor links commuters in the cities of Belfair and Allyn in Mason County with employment centers in Kitsap County such as the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The corridor also serves as an important freight route moving goods to and from Bremerton, the naval shipyards, the South Kitsap Industrial Area, and ports in the south sound. As a vital transportation link for tourism, SR 3 connects destinations such as Hood Canal, Harstine Island, Mason Lake, and many other popular places in Kitsap and Mason counties.

Mark Yand, PE of Parametrix will serve as the project manager. He stated:

The SR 3 Freight Corridor project has a long history with significant involvement from the affected communities. Delivery of this project will require us to work effectively with the local communities, lead a strong technical team, and support and collaborate with WSDOT’s Port Orchard design office to provide timely delivery of all the key documents needed to move the project forward.

Yand has managed similar projects for WSDOT in the past including the I-90 Center Roadway Study.

The project team also includes SCJ Alliance, Historical Research Consultants, HWA GeoSciences, Michael Minor & Associates, Osborn Consulting, Inc., and Community Attributes, Inc.
