Wenatchee, WA – The East Lake Sammamish Trail project team was presented with the 2024 Outstanding Trail Award at the Washington State Trails Coalition Conference in Wenatchee on October 4. Sujata Goel with King County accepted the award on behalf of King County and Parametrix.
The Outstanding Trail Award honors a project that has demonstrated exceptional planning, design, or implementation; public participation; innovative funding; economic impact; outstanding user experience; and benefit to the community.
The 11-mile East Lake Sammamish Trail runs along Lake Sammamish in a former rail corridor through Redmond, Sammamish, and Issaquah. The trail is part of the Locks to Lakes Corridor, a 44-mile-long corridor linking Seattle to the Eastside.
An interim-use gravel trail was opened in 2006. The permanent trail was constructed in five segments from 2011 to 2023. It features a twelve-foot-wide asphalt surface with two-foot-wide gravel shoulders and a one-foot-wide clear zone on each side, plus rest areas, driveway and road intersections, improved drainage, fencing, and signage.
King County Parks used a combination of the voter-approved County property tax levy, federal transportation grants, and state Recreation and Conservation Office grants, as well as strategic phasing to fund the project.
Parametrix has partnered with King County since 1998 to plan, design, permit, and construct the trail.
The project also received a national recognition award from the American Council of Engineering Companies earlier this year.
